A seasons view from the ‘chair’
The season didn’t get off to the flying start John Lorriman (#13) was hoping for with bike trouble at the Mallory Park meeting in April restricting his points haul to just 4. Things took a turn for the better, though, with a stunning display of bike craft at 3 Sisters with wins in 4 out of 4 championship races contested. The father and daughter combination, Malc and Donna MacKay, did their best on this tight and twisty track with 3 second places and a fourth place to lead the championship by 5 points from John Lorriman / Naomi Clough. New boys Dave Dean / Jono Borrington (#14) acquitted themselves well with a fine display of consistent riding and Matt Francis / (Jim Steel / Phil Betty) (#21) managed a couple of races on the ex Tim Miles championship winning Triumph Thunderbird after machine failure blighted his day at Mallory Park earlier in the season. Tony ‘Teddyboy’ Bannister / Colin ‘the tache’ Banks didn’t have the kind of weekend they had hoped for with a raft of minor placings leaving them trailing by some 31 points in the championship. Robin Blowers / Perry Renolds (#6) on the AJS were blighted by bike trouble on Sunday so were unable to add to their points tally from the previous day. The David ‘Psycho’ Sykes / Steve Jackson (#87) pairing had rather a successful weekend, by their standards, finishing in 3 of the four races they contested over the weekend.
Bring on the next round at Cadwell Park on June 20th.
7th July 2010.
Cadwell Park arrived and with it a days racing on the club circuit without the chicane (accident blackspot) on the approach to the long hairpin. The start line was situated on the short straight between the hairpin and Coppice giving all a fair chance of getting away safely. Â Race 1 saw Francis / Stafford (#21) gain their first win of a novice season by a very narrow margin over Weston / Weston (#1) and MacKay / MacKay (#8) in 3rd place. The second race started well with the usual suspects making off at the front followed by White / Steel J (#35) and Dean / Steel M (#14) a few seconds later. All went well until the 5th lap when an overtaking opportunity saw #35 make a passing move on #14 on the approach to the hairpin only to find themselves ‘parked’ in the middle of the hairpin, the result of a spin, and with nowhere to go #14 broadsided the stationary outfit of #35, luckily all parties escaping injury. The resultant incident caused the race to be red flagged, giving the #1 outfit of Nick Weston / Ben Weston (#1) a narrow victory of Miles / Stafford (#21) and MacKay / MacKay (#8). John Lorriman / Naomi Clough (#13) aboard the Triumph outfit failed to take any points from the day and saw the gap widen in the race for the championship title. #6 (Blowers / Renolds) added to their points total with two finishes on the AJS and #87 (Sykes / Jackson) took points from their only finish of the day.
Next, Lydden Hill and a full weekends racing.
